Scott Burks

“Married to my best friend for 19 years. Father of 3 incredible girls. Youth Minister since 1985. Passionate lover of the Bride of Christ. Thinker, Laugher, Door holder, Friend. I like to play and at the end of my life, I want to be known as a person who did all I could to advance the Kingdom of God. My favorite passage of Scripture is Isaiah 55 and the message God stamped on my life in 1983 was Gal 2:20 . . . I have been crucified with Christ, yet — I — live! I want to make a difference. I care about what happens after I die. I fully understand that God wants me to be more concerned about Him than I am with any person I cross paths with while living this temporary life. I’m aware of how short life on earth really is. I know that I am not in control. I don’t always, but I want more than anything to trust God with my life.”

I became a believer in Jesus in 1980 at my church’s summer camp for students. God immediately asked me to go and tell people about Him. It’s my passion, it’s my call and it is part of what God wants me to do at this stage of my ministry. I used to do it all the time and I’m excited about doing it more now.

I can speak on Sundays or Wednesdays as someone who can come alongside what you are currently doing in your ministry.

I can train your leaders through one day seminars, weekend retreats, leader luncheons or custom events designed with your ministry in mind.

I love teenagers and find great freedom to help them see what God wants them to do now and in the future. I care deeply about the church and love the opportunity to teach on Sundays. It’s a blast to get to know a group of leaders and help them take the next step as a group and as individuals . . . when I get the chance to invest in others, I am fulfilled!

I pray daily for God to allow me to use what He’s teaching me daily in the lives of people He brings across my path.

I share on ymnow.com and blog every once in a while at scottburks.me ...  you can also always give me a call 972.689.9639.

Mark Oestreicher

“I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a great family and wonderful youth ministry. By the time I was a senior in high school, I knew I was headed into youth ministry. After college and grad school at Wheaton College, I worked for a bit at Scripture Press Publications, as a Junior High Curriculum Editor. At the same time, I was a part-time Junior High Pastor. Using that combination, God birthed a life-long love of young teens in me. Middle schoolers are still some of my favorite people on earth.

I worked as a junior high pastor in a few churches, and started writing curriculum and other books for multiple publishers. Along the way, I started speaking on middle school ministry at Youth Specialties’ National Youth Workers Convention, and developed a deep love for YS. So I was thrilled when, in 1998, I was able to move to San Diego to join the YS team — first as the VP of Ministry Resources, and later on, as President. I loved my 11 years at YS. But most good things have a season, and my YS season ended in 2009 when our parent company (Zondervan) sold YS to YouthWorks. It was time for me to move out from under the security of a pay check and grow some more.

I launched The Youth Cartel, and was later joined by Adam Mclane. We work to encourage and challenge adults who minister to youth through holistic professional coaching, strategic consulting, transformational events, and inventive resource development that advance youth ministry in new ways.

To our core, we are passionate about Instigating a Revolution in Youth Ministry.

We’re doing this in four areas:

1. Coaching & Consulting

2. Speaking & Gathering

3. Innovative Resource Development

4. Marketing Services

Check out The Youth Cartel website for more info on all of these.

I’m still living out my middle school ministry calling, and volunteer with young teens at Journey Community Church in La Mesa, California. I lead a small group of middle school guys each week, in my home.

I married Jeannie 26 years ago, and have two awesome kids: Liesl is in High School, and Max is in Middle School.

I started blogging quite a few years ago now, and find that it’s a great outlet for me to riff, rant, wrestle and share. It’s somewhat of a spiritual discipline for me at times, and at other times just plain fun.

Love Does Stuff

Bob Says

“I used to want to fix people, but now I just want to be with them.”

“I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I’m more afraid of succeeding at things that don’t matter.”

“Failure is just part of the process, and it’s not just okay; it’s better than okay. God doesn’t want failure to shut us down. God didn’t make it a three-strikes-and-you’re-out sort of thing. It’s more about how God helps us dust ourselves off so we can swing for the fences again. And all of this without keeping a meticulous record of our screw-ups.”

“…love is never stationary.”
